EM: The Last Frontier – Live with Arjun Divecha

Live ·
Featuring Arjun Divecha

Published on: June 16th, 2020 • Duration: 57 minutes

As the developed world grapples with ever increasing levels of debt, slowing GDP, aging populations and historically low yields, there is another part of the world that seems primed for growth. Emerging market economies hold many of the characteristics that are conducive to long periods of economic expansion and prosperity. The question is — how are these countries fairing in the face of a deadly pandemic, and what can we expect from them on the other side of COVID-19? To answer these questions, Arjun Divecha, head of GMO’s Emerging Markets Equity team and a member of the GMO Board of Directors will be joining Real Vision’s Max Wiethe on this week's segment of Live. They will explore everything from today’s outlook on EM within the context of the virus, to how investors should be positioning themselves to benefit from the explosive growth that may come from emerging market economies in the years to come.

Apart from a couple of bullish stock pickers (divergence of opinion isnt always necessarily good) at the end of the day RV has been superb esp over the last 2-3 weeks. Very well conducted interviews and well chosen guests

Congrats on this interview. A very intelligent and knowledgeable about the way the world works. I thoroughly enjoyed his perspective on so many countries and markets. Still would like to hear his specific investments that are his favorites today.

Not sure that Russia and China are great bets going forward. The political risk is too great. We are now entering into a cold war (hopefully not a hot war) with those nations. Unless there is democratic change these countries will eventually be confined to an economically small sphere of influence comprising of the other third world despotic countries that make up the belt and road project.

Over the last 10 years his EM fund has compounded at 0.38 percent even less than MSCI EM index.

I bet Mr. Divecha has done very much better than that. otherwise he would not have wealthy clients. The “dollar and Fangs” comment was priceless. DLS

David S. Those returns are hard cold facts. You would be surprised by how many managers who don’t beat index are still alive in the market. Please go to GMO website to see last 10 yr returns of GMO emerging market fund.

The most insightful discussion on emerging markets on RV so far. An interesting framework, a depth of understanding about the complexity and diversity of emerging markets and how different your approach needs to be when you invest in these places compared to investing in developed markets. Well done Arjun! And good questions from Max and listeners.

Vikram, fully agree with your summary and have no idea why this video got some many down votes. Arjun was very articulate and handle multiple question on the fly and Jack as you said did a great job managing the interview. Will watch again. Donal.

A truly knowledgeable, practical and thoughtful interview. I will listen again in the spring of 2021 when we hopefully can see the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. Until then many people will latch on to any momentary hope that the recession is over. Profits will return and we off to the race until the fall. Mr. Divecha just gave us an in-depth lecture on how to look at EM and how the dollar may respond. Thanks. DLS

Today I learned that AirPods by Apple are absolute crap for videoconferencing. RV, please establish some kind of microphone standard so the levels aren't wandering around like a lost cow in a pasture. Thanks.

Excellent, informative interview. Jeremy Grantham's GMO is among the all time great value investors. The lack of comments about this interview perhaps reflects how out of consensus their value approach currently is. However, investors who want to include equities in their portfolio should be studying emerging markets, watching for the appropriate entry point, which may not be that far away.

If you are willing to DCA over time I think the entry point is now for Russia, China and India.

He seems to have read Daron Acemoglu’s ‘why nations fail’ for the strong institutions argument. Read the book if you want an expansion
