The Bond Whisperer – Live with Komal Sri-Kumar

If there is such a thing as a hierarchical structure within capital markets, then it could be argued that the bond market lives at the top of it. More often than not, it is capable of seeing events long before anyone else, but more importantly, it can warn participants of impending doom or prosperity using yield as its main form of communication. The issue? Equity markets have a tendency to distort reality, so the signals of the wise bond market often fall on deaf ears. For example, why is it that equities are rocketing while the surge that participants expected in 10 year UST yields has yet to materialize? Similarly, why is the DXY beginning to show signs of life in the midst of real yields being in negative territory? To understand what these things mean for investors and the economy as a whole, we’ve invited Dr. Komal Sri-Kumar, president of Sri-Kumar Global Strategies, on this week’s segment of Real Vision Live. He’ll be sitting down with Ed Harrison to explore everything from the elusive V-shaped recovery to existing home sales and retail sales within the broader context of the almighty bond market. I stopped listening when he said we need a vaccine before the economy can recover. He may be a bright guy when it comes to the bond market, but he is clueless when it comes to medicine. And yes, I am a physician.

I expect 'vaccine' is short for 'solution to the medical problem'. A cure will do it, as will bringing mortality down to manageable levels so we can go ahead and open up.

No one could have imagined stocks could become this overprices - yet it happened. Isnt Komal a little bit too certain that inflation could never happen? This is not the second coming of Jesus we are talking about here... Or is it?

I think Kumar's hope for a vaccine may lead to disappointment. Can anyone point to any study that can show the effectiveness of the current flu vaccines. Genuine independant scientific data that is, not narrative.

Mr. Sri-Kumar is another one of my favorite guest. He is smart, experienced, and sincere. I appreciated listening to the interview. The US ecomomy and markets for the next six months to a year are completely opaque to prediction by me. Every assumption has so many possible outcomes. I am on the sidelines waiting for any clarity. A general comment here for Realvision. Please, please, tell your interview partners to switch off the notification sounds on their devices. It is very annoying and distracting from the great content.

Ed is just excellent at framing discussions, and both asking important questions and sharing his own sharp insights. Thanks, guys.

Great discussion. Hard to see how the Fed can get above 2% when they can't even reach that target now. They are stuck in a box as Tommy Thornton explained yesterday. Only tool they have now to spur inflation which they likely won't get anyway is to go to NIRP.
