The Great American Mall: Closed Until Further Notice – Live with Dan McMurtrie

If there is one thing that Americans love, perhaps more than anything else, it is shopping. America has a consumption reliant economy. Yet, Coronavirus threatens to alter the way we live our lives, and in doing so, the very nature of consumer behavior. To better understand the tectonic shift that awaits us on the other side, we have invited Dan McMurtrie, founder of Tyro Capital Management in this week’s Real Vision Live. Also known as SuperMugatu on Twitter, he goes into detail on structural changes to come, data points he is looking at, risks, market timing and most importantly, how the virus will impact consumers in both the immediate and long term.

I can't believe how positive the reviews are of this interview. Dan is eloquent in talking about what has happened but shows no process driven view on the future. If you want a great explanation of where we are read the FT. If you want a strong view of where we are going there are a ton of experienced managers with strong views on RealVision. I'm turning it off 23 minutes in - he has no strong opinion on where to find yield. Well, there are a ton of yield products (rather than his suggestion of cigarette stocks without citing any relevant metrics) that have blown out and yield at or near double digits and because they are higher up the cap structure have more margin of safety (RCS, even MGP). In my view, this shows a lack of work which may be driving the lack of opinion

Great conversation. Thank you. I loved the points about top-down vs. bottom-up dynamics and the election context affecting fiscal stimulus.
