The Ultimate Dichotomy – Live with Mish Schneider

Live ·
Featuring Mish Schneider

Published on: May 28th, 2020 • Duration: 77 minutes

As we look at today’s economic landscape to try to understand what the post COVID-19 world could look like, there is a question that divides market participants, economists, politicians, and central bankers more than anything: “inflation or deflation?” While strong theoretical cases have been made for both, we here at Real Vision like to look to the markets for answers. It seems that the commodities market is screaming at us and, to find out what it’s saying, fan favorite Mish Schneider joins us on this segment of Real Vision Live. She will take us deep into the charts to better understand the situation at hand and how investors can profit moving forward.

I very much like that Mish uses the wording "the gold" and "the silver", when comparing to "the dollar". It's a subtle but I'm sure not accidental matching of the verbiage

I enjoyed the presentation. The market is allocating money rationally as if the world will be normal this fall. Since I do not believe that, the overall market levels are irrational to me. As many choose not to take simple precautions, we will not control the virus. The pandemic will last a long time. If the daily virus counts are not correct, we are only fooling ourselves. The virus really does not care. It just keeps on reproducing. DLS

This is a great video. I really enjoy the diversity of thinking you guys are able to put together on Real Vision. It really helps with creating some understanding of what might happen in the future. Especially for those of us that are still in our 20's and haven't experienced many/any shifts in financial market cycles.

Another great session from Mish - you have become my favourite presenter on RV. It all started with SSYS. The link of sugar to inflation. And your modern family link to the overall health of the economy from a market standpoint. And here I found your dollar "thesis" (or I should say the "lack of one") the most refreshing in a world of analysts who swear by one rule or another. "We'll just have to see what happens" is the most honest assessment of this hotly debated topic that I agree with. Unprecedented times, unprecedented actions by governments and central banks - how can any old arguments apply? We have just never been her before. As a matter of personal opinion - I have not found the dollar milkshake theory or the short dollar argument for debt to be convincing to me. They are good and sound logics to them - but I don't think they capture what is going or not going on.

Hi Sasha, Thank you for your well thought out and articulated comments. I cannot tell you how delighted I am to hear (see) I've reached a "fave" status with you!! Again, thank you. I am also so happy that these theories resonate with you-SSYS, sugar-to inflation, the modern family and my "lack" of a dollar thesis, plus that old arguments are simply that-old. Perhaps we can talk more at some point-I would like that... Best to you-Mish

Be aware that DBA can have costs that the investor is not aware of and cannot control. I took a loss on DBA in 2018, but in addition to the capital loss, I also had a non-passive loss, a big loss from Section 1256 contracts and straddles (which required filing IRS Form 6781 with my tax returns) and also had to pay for gains on interest income and ordinary dividends that the partnership (but not me) received. The investor will be sent a K-1 partnership form for tax reporting. I bought DBA simply because it was bombed out and I thought Ag commodities could rebound, but I had no idea about the potential hidden costs and complications in filing my taxes.

Hello Chuck. Yes, DBA is expensive to hold. As a futures trader, I learned that in 2018 as well. So now, I trade the individual ags like soybeans, wheat and corn-also coffee, cocoa and sugar-those are less expensive if one only trades ETFs and not futs. The best takeaway from DBA is that if that is rising, the stagflation theory driven by food will present all kinds of warnings and opportunities. I thank you very much for your comments on DBA-very helpful.

I love these interviews with Mish. She always offers practical, nuts and bolts advice that is actionable and useful. I know a lot of the thrust of RV is about the high-falutin, high-browed Macro look from above at 30,000 feet, but sometimes we need that to be tempered by a view from what's happening on the ground, too. And Mish does just that.

Great interview. Solid questions from the audience too. I thought the DBA idea was one of the most interesting and probably my favorite idea in the interview. Even though it was only 12 years before I was born, I had no idea about the Yom Kippur war. And it's entanglement with sugar and oil, fascinating stuff for a history buff. Mad props for the BTC love. Virgin Galactic, definitely put that on the radar. I'd be lining up for that too if I could afford it. I thought the whole video had a real smooth flow to it. Lots of great information packed in 80 minutes. Well done Max and Mish.

Hi Collin-and right after the Yom Kippur War, OPEC did an embargo causing an oil shortage. The bigger point is that anything can spark a oil rally-that is the missing link in the 1970's comparison. As far as your other comments, I am deeply grateful and thank you very much. Max is a fabulous interviewer. And 80 minute on camera, well, I am happy I got my hair done! (: Hope you get that Virgin Galactic ticket!! Best, M
