Published on: January 16th, 2020 • Duration: 12 minutes

Frank Cappelleri, CMT, chief market technician at Nomura Instinet, returns to discuss gold, the S&P 500, and the relationship between the two. He lays out a bullish case for $GDX, the gold miners ETF. Using a number of technical indicators in conjunction with price action, he examines $GDX vs. S&P 500 to determine whether the metal everyone loves to hate will outperform the almighty stock market. Really appreciate seeing macro view explained with supporting technicals, including thoughtful probabilities and strategies. Would love to see more segments like this with a regular cadence. Would others tune in to a monthly or quarterly breakdown like this? I absolutely would.

Definitely. I think many real vision viewers who are invested in equities would like regular technical analysis. Great job Frank, I really hope to see you on Real Vision regularly.

Good overview Frank. You seem unique among technicians I follow. Most it seems are always wary of gold when RSIs get stretched but still pound the table on APPL, TSLA, etc with weekly RSIs of 90!

Gold has a 90 mph tailwind thanks to central banks. I'm afraid to be short SPX, but long gold is pedal to the metal in my opinion.

I'm worried mostly about the Comex gold futures and options increasing in open interest volume; the sellers are willing to create as many contracts as possible to blunt the force of increasing gold demand. They know if they lose money the Fed has their back.

Hi Frank, any thoughts on using GDXJ instead? Less liquid, but added volality (and I know this is fundamentals, so not your focus but) M&A, govornance etc, give them some added traction versus GDX maybe. Thoughts?

Hi Ash... It's really a personal preference.... I prefer GDX mainly because it is closer to its 2016 high compared to GDXJ percentage-wise. Getting the direction of Gold right is the most important part in my opinion.... Best, Frank
