Crypto Assets: Hype Cycles and Network Effects

The Interview - Crypto ·
Featuring Qiao Wang

Published on: November 9th, 2020 • Duration: 67 minutes

Qiao Wang, crypto entrepreneur, joins Sebastian Moonjava, Real Vision associate crypto editor, to discuss a wide array of topics including decentralized finance, the Ethereum smart contract moat, the wealth effect in crypto, and hype cycles. Wang describes in detail how he views competition in the open source ecosystem, specifically touching on Ethereum's network effects and composability as moats that may protect its dominance as a platform. He also explains the impact of Bitcoin's growth on smaller assets in the crypto space and trends that develop from this. Wang gives some predictions about the next few years and the cyclical nature of crypto hype cycles. Filmed on October 13, 2020. Key Learnings: Crypto assets are based on networks, and understanding the power of network effects can enable investors to make more informed decisions about this asset class. Bitcoin has built up enormous network effects as a digital store of value while Ethereum has built up network effects around its smart contract platform. This video helps viewers understand the various ways new competitors to these assets will need to excel to overcome the moats they have built up over time.

Qiao has great insights as usual, but I did not like the interviewer (many stupid questions, too much unnecessary commentary).

QE is not same as printing money and pumping it into the economy. It is the banks that print money via debt/credit creation. And banks are not doing fractional reserve lending - this is a myth promoted in econ text books and the economists in the pockets of the 1%.

Also more bullish on Bitcoin for a very simple reason: limited supply. ETH's value is fully dependent on it's ecosystem, and it's ecosystem is inextricably linked to the price of ETH. ETH is much more like fiat. I actually like to think of ETH as a DeCentralized-Bank Digital Currency. There is a market for this though. I think the analogy to silver isn't inaccurate in the short-term, but the narrative around ETH will change as the space matures.

My first thought was "Wow, they got Qiao??" Great discussion. However, it is disappointing this conversation was recorded way back on 10/13... I'd take lower production values if it meant not having to wait a month to hear content like this. Normally RV has about a week lead time; I've never seen it this long before. I guess that's what podcasts are for!

Yeah, I was wondering how they glossed over the new lightening pool, shadow swap stuff for Bitcoin until I saw this comment. For those who don't know there was a huge development for Bitcoin-Defi last week with the announcement of lightning pools.

Yes, it's a shame because the low quality production could dissuade crypto-curious RV subscribers from diving a little deeper, which will keep the video view counts low, and then the production along with it!

Interesting to hear about the Ethereum moats. University students that I know of who build blockchain projects use Ethereum because it's so much easier to find help online. Not dissimilar to developing your first app in Android instead of iOS, except Ethereum ALSO has the first mover's advantage that iOS had with smartphones.
