eToro: Social Trading and the Rise of Retail Investors

The Interview - Crypto ·
Featuring Yoni Assia and Ash Bennington

Published on: February 18th, 2021 • Duration: 63 minutes

Yoni Assia, founder and CEO of eToro, joins Ash Bennington, Real Vision senior editor, to discuss eToro, the rise of retail investors, and the value of tokenization. Assia explains that eToro started as an attempt to improve the user experience for retail investors getting started with investing when he quickly realized that the social features of the platform were the most used. eToro’s social features include copy trading, which allows users to copy the trades of others on the platform, creating a type of hands-on learning experience for new traders. Assia describes the rise of retail investors as a result of current circumstances such as low interest rates and lockdowns due to the pandemic, resulting in a generational buying movement. He touches on the importance of the tokenization of assets, stating that he believes that, in the future, all assets will be able to be traded 24/7 and that digital assets are making this possible. Filmed on February 9, 2021.

Key Learnings: The global investor pool seems to be growing, and eToro is looking to support those new to investing by providing social tools, such as “copy trade.” Tokenization will enable 24/7 markets in stark contrast to limited trading hours and days markets are bound by today.

Where are the old great interviews of the first RV? I do prefer to pay for the same membership price and to have fewer contents but reliable. This is pure shit. And Etoro a Circus.

They are all still there on RV Essential. This is RV Crypto, it serve a different audience for a different purpose - a whole new future...and you get it for free. Meanwhile on RV Essential, you can enjoy Felix Zulauf.

I am in for a whole new future and I understand it is free RV Crypto. Nothing bad about that, but would be better to interview all the people screwed by Etoro in Europe with all its pure marketing, high fees, and suspected platform. Just make an account and go on the dashboard just to view all the angry people posting..and Yes I am both a gold bug and a proud bitcoin hodler plus also some alt. I do not stand on a side but I look after investments.

eToro was my first trading platform, learned a lot there, it's the best user experience for newbies. My portfolio is up 850% in 17 months (after fees), only 3 red months, 962 trades... only once I got bad trade execution which they refunded... most people complaining on dashboard are angry about bad bets or improper use of the tools.

I think these interviews with actors in this space is very interesting, normally you only get 2 minute from a CEO presenting quarterly results. Israel is on the forefront of many things these days.

Another advertisement? It has some interesting parts but as a paying RV subscriber I would prefer more insights on all crypto related matters, not somebody talking about their own company again. And yes, there is still enough great content videos coming on, but I notice RC crypto is more and more getting an advertisement platform.

Is there anyone who tells you to buy anything? I really enjoy getting to know different players in the FinTech/Crypto industry.

Etoro is not "player" in the crypto industry, just a trading platform . They need more clients so that's why they pay RV to do a video.

You are salty they post video almost everyday, they cannot interview the same people again and again.

I didn't see it that way at all. eToro is a huge player. It's fascinating to see how they got going. I will study them more, though, after seeing all these negative comments.

Just makes me even more restless to get verified on eToro. They must be swamped. I'm itching to trade on their platform, been about two weeks awaiting verification.

Etoro with all due respect from all the cfd platforms I have checked incl. oanda and ig. Is somewhere I wil never trade. I think this company will go bust. All platforms are being careful about leverage trading. I think etoro has all the cards to be the bankruptcy scenario... we shall see.

Free trading but you will get killed on the spreads. Maybe good for a really small account, I ended up down 25% minus the fees I was actually up to flat, admittedly I did over trade a bit but still.

I'm still thinking of the implications of that trade copy algorithm. A popular retail trader with the financial impact of a hedge fund, all traded at once thru copycat accounts with no thought into how that affects the bid/ask. Incredible.

Great interview Ash. Thanks Yoni. Been watching e-Toro for a while. Curious what they'd do if they got $GME'd - meaning their profitable trader (meaning the followers too) was draining liquidity from their LP?

I made a comment a while back saying I never thought I could warm to suits but I wanna go on record and retract it ha. Intellectually I have the utmost respect for you guys. The vast majority of the guests I've seen seem like decent, solid people. It's just that I can see where the money has gone and I'm sat here on £90 a week. I'm doing my best but there's gonna be moments. Anyway. Loving the content. Substance over style.. keep it that way..

Etoro is the shittiest pseudo brokerage ever. Even worst than the American friend Robinhood. High commissions and a bunch of fake Guru traders. This is not social trading, is purely shitty marketing for teenagers.

Please tell us when you're screening paid interviews in the title. You know we're not stupid. Raoul says RV Crypto is free. It's free because RV gets paid to shill garbage like eToro. Why not do a video on social media trading platforms' nonsense and the scam of selling user's data to wall street hedge funds. eToro is not free trading. That's a lie. eToro is entertainment for bored and naive kids, not serious investors building wealth for future decades. Please don't dance around and call it innovation.
