Exploring Decred and On-Chain Analysis

The Interview - Crypto ·
Featuring Checkmate and Sebastian Moonjava

Published on: March 8th, 2021 • Duration: 69 minutes

Checkmate, on-chain analyst at Glassnode and Ready Set Crypto, joins Sebastian Moonjava, Real Vision associate crypto editor, to discuss the value of on-chain analytics, Bitcoin cycles, and an overview of Decred. Checkmate explains that on-chain analytics is the observation of transaction flows on-chain, allowing analysts to see patterns in the data such as how long since a coin was last spent or whether miners are holding or selling coins. This data can be extremely useful as it can indicate whether current prices are healthy or potentially overvalued. He explains that the historical data of Bitcoin demonstrates that price action is strongly cyclical, mentioning that we now have three clear data points from previous bear and bull markets showing a cyclical trend. Checkmate also discusses the Decred project, and he explains that one of the most interesting aspects of Decred is its hybrid consensus model, meaning that it uses both proof of work and proof of stake for its security. Some other notable features of Decred is its unique treasury and governance features. Filmed on February 16, 2021.

Key Learnings: On-chain analytics provide real time data about transaction flows, and this data can be used to find useful patterns or valuation health. Historical data seems to indicate cyclical patterns, similar to a boom and bust cycle for Bitcoin. Checkmate also talks about Decred, which uses a hybrid proof of work and proof of stake model for its security.
