The Cannabis Trade: An Industry Set to Take Off

Tony Greer Interviews ·
Featuring Jason Wild and Tony Greer

Published on: January 20th, 2021 • Duration: 75 minutes

Jason Wild, founder of JW Asset Management, sits down with Tony Greer, founder of TG Macro, to discuss his career journey from pharmacist to investor with a firm that oversees $1 billion through a mix of investments in pharmaceuticals and cannabis producers. Wild’s early success came from assembling Arbor Pharmaceuticals and later selling it to KKR in 2014 for a large profit. He used the proceeds to invest in major Canadian cannabis companies, and he has since become one of the first U.S. institutional investors in legal cannabis companies. Today he is building the global cannabis company TerrAscend, where he is Chairman. Filmed January 14, 2021.

Key Learnings: Wild identifies the top cannabis stocks to invest in and why he focuses on operating in limited-license states where there is less competition. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped drive investor demand in the cannabis industry and states and voters are finally realizing that cannabis legalization is a solution to help revive the economy.

Great interview! amazing high energy all around (no pun intended). Got a question for JW, if I may; What's your view (and appetite) for Europe. It seems like the new frontier - minimal investment and rapidly changing legal landscape. I recently for the opportunity to structure a private deal with a couple of licenses to grow in southern Europe and I'm thinking its the place to be, but I definitely want to hear your view.

Hi Christos, Could you point us to some resources regarding cultivation licenses in Europe? Keen to learn more. Thanks in advance

Forgive me for the unsolicited advice, but it made it difficult to listen to this interview. Tony, when you are interviewing someone, please: * Don't interrupt them * Don't talk while they are talking * Wait for them to finish their thought completely before saying something I want to hear what the interviewee is saying and you keep cutting him off to say something that ends up being wrong and he has to correct you. Don't guess what happens next. Ask an open-ended question that prompts the interviewee to give you the information you're expecting. Example: BAD. TG: "And then you went back to Canada" JW: "No I stayed in the United States." GOOD. TG: "What did you do next?" JW: "We increased our investment in the United States." Anyway sorry for being that guy and thanks for doing the interview, it was useful. :)

Exactly right Jorge. Ironically, two guys talking about pot, sounded likely they'd each done a bump of cocaine prior to the interview. Also ironic is that capitalists avoid free(er) markets (Jason says he wants to be in limited licensing states). Common on Jason isn't your product good enough?

Honestly I made it about 40 minutes into this interview and didn't really hear anything that I'd write down. Sounded more like the history of a guy with a profitable company than extracting the essence of why he was successful. Did they save it all for the end? Maybe, but my time is worth something too, so I just paused it and went on with my day.

Loved the interview. First time i ever heard about Jason was from the Barrons interview a few weeks ago. Very inspiring life story and methodical business approach. I feel like running out or staying home and either dropping some LSD or psillocybin with the hope it will bring me exponential returns but It probably will not work for me so I will just buy some Terrascend :) ....Timothy Leary is smiling somewhere.

I think you're right about psilocybin (don't know much a about DMT) as far as impact goes. In terms of profitability how do you think psilocybin will compare to cannabis?

Great interview with an interesting guest. Thanks for hitting this sector--it'll def be one of the great investment stories of 2021. There's a load of private equity that's been piling in last year (as JW affirmed), and the industry has been consolidating quietly. Watch especially for legacy players who are coming out of the shadows with sophisticated management and fresh capital, along with completely integrated companies who are operating from growth to CBD consumer lines in wholesale and retail.

Very good interview. I am invested in Pot stocks, not too aggressive though, I think they will pull back pretty hard if the market has a meaningful correction...

Excellent interview that really brought great enthusiasm to the sector and possibility of outstanding return on investment. I would have found it helpful to get some insight into valuation metrics as a guideline to evaluating current cannabis equities available to the retail investor. The equities seem to be valued for explosive growth at this time. When do you think we could get ahead of our skis? Really enjoyed the information provided.
