Featuring Peter Brandt

Published on: May 17th, 2017 • Duration: 45 minutes

Our exclusive series, chronicling the life and career of classical chartist and trading legend Peter Brandt, concludes with Episode 5 – The Process of Trading. In this episode, Peter breaks down the “dead serious” business of trading, running through his process, every step of the way, in a typical week at Factor Trading. It’s a process that has been enduringly successful with a track record of 40% returns over a 40-plus year career.

Thank you so much peter. For 13 years I have been trading without knowing how a successful trader trade and what goes behind and what it takes to become a professional trader. Glad that I am on the right path of competing against myself but picked up some very good points about measuring performance, risk management and trade management. Thank you once again. Wish you a long healthy life ahead.

This is absolutely amazing content. I have watched several of the episodes over several times and continually pick up new priceless morsels of knowledge (and I have been a factor member for several years) that have and will continually change how I think, process and analyze information, behave and ultimately trade. Peter B. and RealVision, thank you so much for putting this together.

Thank you for all the wisdom Peter !! This is a must watch (and a repeat watch) for everyone to learn the importance of discipline in any field. I truly believe I learnt a lot and grew mentally with this entire series. A quick question - when you mentioned you actively and aggressively manage your stops, I assume the stop and trailing stop levels are predetermined. So, do you have alerts on these predetermined levels during the day to modify/put these stop orders in ? Or do you do this only on a closing price basis for all markets ? Thank you very much again !

I didn't put this series on my initial 'must watch' list as I thought I was an investor rather than a trader and therefore the presentations wouldn't apply. Having now watched them all I don't think I've ever been more wrong. Peter's philosophy and disciplined approach have really opened my eyes to what it takes to be successful in trading and /or investing where a lot of his disciplines will apply to both.I thought his approach to Risk Management was priceless on its own. Needless to say I'll be watching these again and studying the transcripts. Thanks absolutely brilliant!

Excellent Peter, thank you for your time. The clarity of your explanations on the subject matter is amazing. You mentioned you treat trading as a business, how do you distinguish your salary (for living expenses, children's college funds, vacation expenses etc), from your trading capital? This is an issue I am currently mulling over; can I spend $XX on a family holiday, or do I need it in my capital reserve, or should I put it on my next trade?

Thank you Peter. Question: knowing the FHT/Algo propensity for running stops, isn't it a good idea to analyse each market to see the degree of false breakouts, what is the percentage of false breakouts compared to the total and also how high/low they go before reversing? I believe that if I know that usually, a certain market will breakout but 60% will retrace, this may help me being over cautious? The argument against it is, of course, how fat the tails are in the distribution. Thank you for adding your comments on this.

The danger is in entering markets either overnight or during the trading session when HFT/Algos are most active in hunting for stops. I have found that by waiting until the closing price patterns become more reliable.

Thank you Peter for taking the time to do this is has been invaluable to me and others. Questions if you got the time. You don't ask, you don't get right! 1. Do you completely ignore fundamental variables if the chart is telling you to trade. i.e. something like VRX just now seems to be breaking out but major fundamental issues? 2. When do you execute the entry ,exit, stop etc? Directly on the breakout or x amount % above/below the break out? 3. As you mentioned HFT running typical market stops seems to be a real thing and therefore a way round this could be mental physical stops, trails etc. Do you do this or does it break the emotionally detached rule and prove to difficult to instigate ?
