Beat the Downturn with Deep Value

The Expert View ·
Featuring Des Kinch

Published on: June 4th, 2018 • Duration: 30 minutes • Asset Class: Bonds/Rates/Credit, Equities • Topic: Portfolio Management, Asia, Europe

Des Kinch of Overseas Asset Management is an advocate of deep value investing. Since he believes that valuations for bonds and U.S. equities are at extreme levels, Des has gone hunting for opportunities in Asia and Europe, where he searches for deeply discounted and often illiquid investments that could weather a downturn in global markets. Filmed on May 14, 2018 in Grand Cayman.

How long does everyone have to complain about the music for you to do something about it?

For Heaven's Sake, stop complaining, everyone. The intro / ending music is catchy and cool. I for one like it. It certainly sounds a whole lot better than the competition ( ie the tired and boring intro music on CNBC and Bloomberg )

The music is great. Pretty cruisy for somebody who considers the following heavily melodic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k9ksnJrljw (2:03 in) Can't please everybody on an element that is so subjective. Personally, when it comes to musical taste, I'll take what I can get away with... :)

Agreed with below comments on a good interview. Although I take a different approach to markets the interviewee provides interesting perspectives.

Very interesting to listen. Especially I like some of the charts, e.g. Unemployment / Recessions and Corporate Debt / GDP. If possible, it would be good to include the data sources for further checking and analysis.

Can anyone tell me what file type the Transcripts are in. When I download them on my PC, the file type just displays as "file", and I cant open them. Thanks for any help.

Had the same problem. Don't download. Just view the file first and then save it.

It comes down as a .pdf for me, so just change your file name to include .pdf so your computer opens a pdf reader automatically.

wow, a 61 MB pdf. I'm not sure why it needs to be such a large file for 14 pages and 9 charts.

I suspect the file size is due to the color background in the charts. The downloaded transcript was named 'transcript.pdf' on my linux computer.

Amazing content for pointing out deep value global single name opportunities. Please do something about the audio. It is too loud.

Good interview (I agree with others that the music is horrible). I wonder why Sberbank frequently comes up as a good Russian investment opportunity and not Gazprom?

agree completely with the comments on the music that subscribers have to suffer through. We're dealing with financial presentations & discussion if we have to have music at all please at least try & make it unobtrusive ! Henry B

This music is the kind of music that you put in an ad to get new subs...exciting, makes you sit up and listen...Putting it in the actual content is jaring. I think you can take the excitement level down a notch and add in some class.

very well thought out discussion on both his approach as well as his positions. would be interested in how much cash he would raise when the downturn arrives so he does not give back a good portion of his returns.
