The Future of Quants

The Expert View ·
Featuring Ray Carroll

Published on: January 7th, 2019 • Duration: 21 minutes • Topic: Investment Framework, Quantitative Trading, Portfolio Management

Ray Carroll, CIO of Neuberger Berman Breton Hill, makes his Real Vision debut with a revolutionary perspective on how to effectively harness the power of quantitative investing. For years, Carroll has championed the idea of combining data derived from quants with a fundamental process for gathering information. The resulting concept is a “Quantimental” approach that has enabled his firm to uncover unique opportunities within the market. Filmed on December 12, 2018 in New York.

Would love to know what the alpha is with his firm, and actually any PMs that speak on Real V. Not really easy to get performance number, but I suspect many haven't beaten the index in a meaningful way in a long time.

GaveKal Knowledge Leaders are pioneers in the R&D work. You should get one of the PMs in. They've published multiple whitepapers on it.

High level chat as you'd expect to fit the topic into 20mins. Personally I find this 20min format v useful to watch (it's a good balance between time and learning) vs the 1hr interviews where I appreciate the deep dive but don't always have a spare hour slot in the day to put aside.

Wow - not every video has to provide a level of granularity where a specific insight or trade is hatched. For RV subscribers that are not familiar with quant, this opens eyes and changes perspectives. Do you see useful stuff like this on those 'financial entertainment channels' or is it just talking heads offering shallow and flimsy analysis? He brings up some great points regarding correlation/causation....something that is often incorrectly applied by far too many 'amateurs' who get exposure and visibility.....that is a really misleading to those watching those types of so-called 'experts'

As AI is integrated into trading, the usefulness of quants will expand. This was discussed in a short section of the Stanley Druckenmiller interview. He is watching now, but not ready to jump in. If passive investing remains dominate, then AI will have only limited information. If active investing is reborn on a large scale, then AI should be able to provide a distinct market edge to someone sophisticated enough to understand it. DLS

Lots of words. No structure. No serviceable information. Examples without context. Mostly an advert for the speaker’s company.
