Why Big Soda’s Political Strategy Matters

Featuring Alex Rosenberg, Justine Underhill, Roger Hirst

Why will local efforts to curb obesity mean more states will ban grocery taxes? Justine, Alex and Roger discuss the rise of the soda tax, biased cola research, Big Soda’s 2018 revenge and how the sweetened drinks companies parallel the tobacco industry. Filmed on December 3, 2018.

Are the proposed taxes on all sodas or just those containing sugar? If the tax took the form of an excise on refined sugar, Big Soda could continue to make profits from selling the diet/zero calorie products, or is that too sensible?

At the same time many are pushing pot legalization, which is another form of smoking, in order to collect more taxes, and saying "We should be able to smoke pot if we want to." People will continue to drink soda even with a tax if that is what they want.

By the way, Alex, in reference to suing doctor's under HIPAA law. You're apparently conflating HIPAA (privacy law) with the Hippocratic Oath (old Greek tradition for which little evidence exists in current medical practice. Neither creates the necessary legal foundation to bring a lawsuit because a physician participated in research that resulted in findings you reject.

Thank you, Alex, for bringing up the nanny state aspect. How about we reduce the externalities by getting government out of healthcare, also? Any time we start from the assumption that all of the answers have to come from the government, we fly right in the face of any concept of personal liberty and personal responsibility.
There is actually something to Alex's suggestion for shaming as a means of nudging the conversation but first we have to get around our current aversion to being "offended" because as the current pace, it won't be long before what Alex is advocating is outlawed as "hate speech". Be careful with that "tisk, tisk!"....

For every 1 embarrassed person on food stamps I've stood behind, there are at least 100 who aren't. It's to the point that it's accepted.

    Alex,
It is becoming "cool" again to smoke (at least in Canada where the government has legalized the sale of Pot). The government is pleased to soon be collecting billions of dollars of Pot-related sales tax revenues! Canadian medical association has identified many health risks associated with Canabis (see: https://www.cma.ca/Assets/assets-library/document/en/advocacy/submissions/2016-aug-29-cma-submission-legalization-and-regulation-of-marijuana-e.pdf) but this has had no impact on legislators actions (IMHO).

We need a happy knock on effect next time: big corp pushes sugar drinks, people get fat, obesity is linked to depression, depressed people buy cats and are bored > RESULT: more funny cute internet cat videos!
