Daily Briefing – November 13, 2020

Daily Briefing ·
Featuring Jack Farley, Ash Bennington, and Raoul Pal

Published on: November 13th, 2020 • Duration: 46 minutes

Real Vision CEO, Raoul Pal, and senior editor, Ash Bennington, discuss the growing shutdown measures in the U.S. even as the S&P 500 makes all-time highs. Looking at declining mobility data, Pal explores how the prospect of a full lockdown in the U.S will depress economic activity as well as perhaps markets. He and Ash then discuss default risk and the stock sales of Pfizer’s CEO before zooming out into macro issues such as how stagnant money velocity affects retirees and how rise in the monetary base could buoy precious metals and bitcoin. In the intro, Jack Farley reviews price action, evaluates the distress of cruise liners, and the looming expiration of the Fed’s emergency lending programs.

Really good Daily Briefing, this one got really technical which is much appreciated so much so that I am thinking of switching to pro. Always good to see Raoul get technical ( we need more Raoul interviews ). We also need an episode dedicating to hedging bitcoin risk for retail investors. If we want people to adopt it we need a way to hedge our spot btc.

Raoul pal says, just let the next year pass, prepare for the worst and hope for the best. but has also said before he moved to an island to be away from this when it happens. Everything tells me its going to get real bad and i have been doing my best to prepare since 2016, Things are going to get real bad and we dont even know what things will look like on the other side or how many of us will survive. Buckle up!

I know the near term future looks bright for bitcoin and gold. But I think the best long term play right now is EM equities. I know you say this trade will be there in the future and then you can head to the beach and call it a day. But I think the day has come to really profit from your Monsoon hypothesis. IMHO that is the best long term trade for this unique time - you will be able to go the beach for a really long time indeed on that one. Thoughts?

Can us PLUS subscribers get some free stuff too? Maybe one free Marco report per month? This way as we earn more from content, we will be more than willing to pay $800 plus per quarter as our earning power goes up. $600 a year to $2500 a year is a huge jump, from plus to pro. Maybe one free and the every other report for a cost. I'm not at the point in which I would even benefit from direct access to Raoul, but I could learn a lot from the Marco reports that come with the Pro sub. in the meanwhile. As a Plus sub. I can email 3 free videos a month, for the benefit of those individuals, and RV, but nothing is coming free in my directions. Hell you could even do a Plus and Macro reports package for like $800 a year. Please consider, thanks!

No. They changed the subs within 3 months last year. I loved the channel, had a December sub, then in 3 months they tiered it so that I was low level. I think this is why GW left, btw. Shady, at best.

BTC is also at major resistance. Watching the 12K support line. But it would be nice to buy back 2 -4K lower. Now we also see ETH rolling over. I know you're suppose to never sell a bull market but I can't resist juicy set ups. My risk is I suck it up and buy higher. We will see if I am right over the next few months.

Did I hear the US government seized $1 billion of bitcoin that had been stolen from Silk Road sometime back. How is this possible? How was the original theft possible? It makes me wonder if any crypto can be stolen, if not by hackers then by governments. There was also a story this week about how phone services were not allowing links to pro-Trump sites to be sent. Interesting that phone services can limit such. For me, this relates to whether crypto transactions can be blocked by phone service providers. Or information stolen. I haven't see this addressed anywhere.

For what it is: I been following up all of them and the deflation view is gonna prevail for the time been, once they start MMT which is coming / or direct loans to consumers from backs guaranteed by the government on scale. I have no doubt inflation is conning not yet, just not yet, and been early can cost a lot of money It is deflationary world, gold is the only thing that works both ways, and even gold can lose money short term so never by it on margine

While I love the work you guys do, I find it surprising and frustrating that you are both so naive when it comes to COVID and don’t have any idea how to interpret the Case data. It is NOT the virus which is causing anything; it’s the lockdowns imposed by governments. That’s the primary force driving the insolvency. Please read up on things further, or simply speak to the data and refrain from spreading misleading analysis. Thanks.

There are two fronts to this war. Both need to be addressed with care. There is no easy balance in the West. You can open everything, but many people will stay home anyway. Everything is being tried in the West except what works. Taiwan is doing the best IMO. Lots of testing. If you are positive you are under strict quarantine in a hotel. They never locked down. Only 602 cases and 7 deaths with about 24 million people. DLS

Raoul Pal NEVER fails to amaze. Despite the 39-year bull market run in bonds we've had, which began in 1981, with rates up around 15%, he manages to find a way to make a convincing case for still going long despite our current proximity to the zero-bound where the r/r seems awful. But, his point about the 4-standard deviation away from the mean short interest is noteworthy to say the least. Wow. I have some thinking to do.

So many gems here. Got the E-mail from Raoul suggesting to watch this one. I usually watch them the day of but this one got away from me. Great interview, love the quote from Jack's professor too. " Good companies raise cash, bad companies raise equity." Short and sweet. Credit systems not lending to SME, the 30 year Treasury, reflation story being taken out and shot, a re ringing of the pension crisis bell, Megaphone top in the SP with bearish divergence. I took more notes during this briefing than any other. Looking forward to the Vitalik interview as well. Best membership I own in the world is Real Vision. Thanks guys.

Raoul - would be interested in your views on Brent Johnson's recent interview with Russell Napier, which was superb. Russell might be one of the most incisive and knowledgeable thinkers in macro I've come across, and he presents a strong case for a forthcoming inflationary regime. Would be great to see you and him line up in a debate. I see his view of the future as having a much higher probability of playing out. Inflation vs. Deflation is a dynamic we can only understand by going deeper than the broader trends in demographics, and it doesn't only depend on the total amount of debt in the system, but rather the TYPE of debt created (bank vs. non-bank). Would love to see a debate between the two of you. Cheers.

I know you see the dollar supported by the world wide demand for dollars to support so many essential transactions. But Asian/Monsoon EM equities have been starting to move north and I don't see that reversing. The recent rapid spread of Covid in Western countries runs so counter to the current experience on the ground at least in Northern Asia. GIven the low saving rates in the US there has to a great deal more stimulus on the way in 2021 and I presume the dollar will be rolling over then for real. I think the recent EM equity movement is the train starting to leave the station...thoughts?

I greatly looking forward to the interview on RV with Sam Zell, who has demonstrated an amazing ability to buy and sell real estate (and real estate companies) at the optimum time. That's a real coup for RV to have an interview with him. However, although Zell's track record does include multi-family residential, I don't believe that it includes single family residential. We bought a number of single family residences in 2010-2012 (including a new primary residence and rental properties), when the residential market bottomed, and like Chris S., these assets now represent by far the largest allocation in our portfolio. While RV has sporadically had some excellent interviews about residential markets, a greater consistent focus on residential markets would be greatly appreciated. All RV viewers are directly impacted by the residential market, whether they are now renters, or own their primary residence, and perhaps a second home or residential investment properties. While everyone needs to live somewhere, the form it takes can change. One of the best investment moves my wife and I ever made was in 2005 (just before the residential market cratered) when we sold our primary home of 30 years, and moved into a rental apartment.

Quack chart and/or misleading commentary around the 26 minute mark. We are led to believe that Brazil all but snuffed out the virus relative to Europe and the US? Brazil? Brazil really? Keep it up fellas... One is on a island that can very easily stop all incoming/outgoing migration. The other is in New York with one of the worst covid performing states of the Union, run by blue politicians, who are now denying the federal government the ability to send it the vaccine? I thought blue was the party of science? We are done buying the covid narrative. You can't wipe your hands of this narrative push simply by saying "regardless of your politics, the virus ..." RV is quickly becoming part of the concerted covid hype narrative push and it is a shame. Brazil? Really?

Raoul That's the point...we don't know the answer to that. However asset correlations converge toward 1 in a severe downturn as we saw with the 2018 Volmagadone, the 2018 Xmas Eve massacre, and the Covid black swan. Bitcoin went down with the best of them...however I will grant you that it more than outperformed on the upside. But human nature is to sell the winners and hope the losers come back...;)

In Oz we have renters not paying rents but that is about to expire. Not saying it may not be back if things go ugly again. But landlords are being given lot of flexibility by banks. Some banks already announced they will not force sales before Sep 2021. And Oz banks are just home loan businesses – ~90% of their earnings comes from home loans. One may ask how will banks survive? RBA are buying their bonds via newly launched TFF (term funding facility) that all banks will use. Banks are counting our economy will keep improving and by 2021 most people would have started repaying their loans. Whoever failed to get back on their feet by Sep 2021 will be sent to the wall and shot – foreclosures. Risk here is if Oz economy does not fire up. Worth keeping eye on this as we are in the middle of trade war with China who represents 30% or our exports.

Raoul you're brilliant, but the number of times you say you've predicted this before, talked about this before, warned about this, etc. etc, is getting in the way of the message. Thank you. Must be all the rain you've suffered through :)

Because its important to know that this isn't just a comment but a narrative arc based on extensive on going research that is playing out in front of us. Too much of the what we see is opinion and not analysis.

TOTALLY 100% wrong about the virus the excess mortality rate is not even a blip above the average https://ourworldindata.org/excess-mortality-covid the virus is now endemic and it's nothing more than a regular flu now - infact it is basically the flu hospitals are no busier - if not emptier than normal years you have to dig to get the real data

Raoul, thanks, as always. Question- it seems that you and your business partner Julian differ on many of your macro calls, one being the direction of the dollar. Another being inflation. You each make a compelling case to support your thesis. I’m curious as to what your recommendation is for some of us viewers are a little confused buy this divergence of conclusions drawn from the same research and philosophy.

At RV you only get theses, not answers. Moreover, you don't even get prediction confidence indicators. But I guess everyone is kind of selling their book here, so maybe it's 110%. ;-) So write the important points down, and revisit the outcomes every 3-6 months. Pretty soon you'll find out who gets the hit rates, or not.

Raul, I like a man with conviction. Every doubter must be wary that you may well be proved correct in your assumptions on Bitcoin. So many times in my life, whether investing or life in general I have thought " if only ". It ain't gonna happen with Bitcoin. I'm in. 73 years young in January and I'm going for it. Four years ago a packed living room of relatives thought I was crazy when I encouraged them to buy bitcoin. Even more so when it dumped in 2017. Now as individuals they ask if I still have them. They have that " if only " look on their faces. Good luck with RV's new venture. So excited.
