Inside the Episode – Insider Talks (Oct 2020)

Insider Talks ·
Featuring Roger Hirst

Published on: October 17th, 2020 • Duration: 32 minutes

In the pilot episode of this new series, managing editor, Roger Hirst, dissects the October 2020 episode of Insider Talks to flesh out some of the nuances of what Raoul and Julian covered in their usual fast pace. In particular, Roger focuses on the mechanics and messaging behind QE as well as its effect on stock markets and the yield curve. Also in this episode, Roger goes deeper into real yields and their relationship to the price of gold; portfolio vs speculative flows; crash patterns; why regional banks are potentially a better short exposure than junk bonds; and lastly, how at the end of all this, digital currencies could be the path forward that would give central banks the flexibility they need. This is required viewing for this weekend. Filmed on October 13, 2020.

Great video thanks! This really helped reducing the fog around YCC and QE, etc. One blurry spot left, can someone help me clarifying. I'm struggling to understand the following: When QE is on, bond purchases - either buying by the FED, or buying by the market, frontrunning the FED - should drive up bond prices, and should push down yield, correct? But on the charts I see the opposite: during QE yields goes up or stays flat during QE. (opposing to NO-QE periods when yields are mostly falling) If we focus on the daily chart of US10Year or US05year (yields): on the very day when QE announced by fed (eg: QE1 November 25, 2008) I can see the big red candle (yield down, bond up) that is what we expect from QE, right ? As everyone jumps on and buys those bonds, so price jumps. But this lasts only one day, and during the rest of the QE period the yield is trending up that is the opposite direction. This might only related to a wrong wiring in my fundamental understanding....someone could enlighten me please ?

I should add what I would like is an explanation of the different tools the fed has and how funds move about. So for ex Fed vs Big Banks vs Home Lone and IOER . There are no good Youtube videos on this. If you do this, please use flowcharts as I and many others are visual learners. thanks again

This is a FANTASTIC new addition to the Insider Talks area. Roger really helps one to understand and put together the various incredibly fascinating topics Raoul and Julian breeze through in their most excellent Insider Talks discussions. Roger's clear explanations and the weaving together of the topics really aids in cementing in your mind what is really important about the areas covered by R and J. Looking forward to future "Explainers". Thanks a ton Roger!!!
