Published on: August 23rd, 2020 • Duration: 61 minutes

In the second part of Real Vision’s ground-breaking documentary, Grant Williams examines how gold is bought and sold around the world, explains the difference between ‘the gold price’ and ‘the price of gold,’ and explores some of the legends that surround the yellow metal. Grant also weighs up the possibility of the world returning to a gold standard and addresses the all-important accusations of manipulation that surround the subject of man’s 6000-year obsession.

Great to re-watch. Let's have your guests discuss the next crisis, the Great Sovereign Debt Crisis. Love these long, well meditated themes!

Serious question, if gold is money - and I get that it once was or might be in the East - why can’t I buy anything with it? I can’t buy a loaf of bread, a car or a book with it, so why the angst about paper gold? And if the answer is Armageddon, won’t I probably be killed if I try to buy groceries with gold? I have made good money on GLD but the gold bugs seems to think that owning physical gold is worth the high cost of ownership and storage and I just don’t get why.

Such a great series. It is kind of sad this is re-run instead of having Grant do a followup.

I am a physical gold holder as well as GLD holder. I understand the benefit of physical in the extreme black swan scenario. But what is the most likely risk to GLD in anything other than epic global collapse? In that scenario, I understand that the ETF provider will just refuse to pay out the gold because there is no rule of law. But is that really the extreme scenario that causes the concern, or is there something more likely to happen? Just plain old insolvency.

Gold = solid store of value over millennia. Cryptos = we'll see what happens.

Cryptos is more like = emerging technology that replicates & improves properties of gold, seeks to compete

A gold based cryptocurrency is never going to be taken seriously because the idea is absurd. Every single gold backed currency has failed throughout history as the counterparty fails. They rip on gold ETF's and say you must own physical but then say a gold based crypto might be the future...I dont get it. I think this is just a way for gold bugs to stay relevant against Bitcoin. As a physical gold holder and a Bitcoin holder, Im not convinced.

How about how you shouldn't own GLF ETF because you have counterparty risk, but you can send your gold halfway around the world to a vault and it's ok
